Message from the Vice Chancellor

It is my immense pleasure to welcome you all at Khulna Agricultural University (KAU), Khulna. Agriculture is a leading sector contributing to the rapid development of socio-economic status of Bangladesh in recent decades. The father of our nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had a life-long dream to build a happy and prosperous Bangladesh by improving the livelihood of farmers and agriculture sector throughout the country.

The southern region of Bangladesh is highly prone for natural disaster and possesses many dissimilarities compared to other areas in terms of agriculture, geography, salinity, biodiversity, climate change and economic status. Sheikh Hasina, honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has realized the above challenges and thought of establishing an agricultural university in this region. Because of her strong wishes, Khulna Agricultural University Act was implemented at the National Parliament on 14th July 2015.

Despite limitations, the southern part of Bangladesh has huge opportunities for all the aspects of agricultural development. The area possesses a vast ocean boundary, many water bodies and natural resources in addition to the largest mangrove forest of the world, Sundarbans. Crops, livestock and fisheries are the main driving force of the agriculture industry. The primary objective of establishing KAU was to produce world class graduates, whose research and skill will contribute in innovating sustainable technologies and high yielding varieties and breeds that would fit well with the climatic and geographical condition of the region. By disseminating these to farmers, a revolution in agricultural production is achievable. Apart from contributing to boost up the country’s food production, KAU will focus on ensuring safe food.

We are moving forward to make KAU as the center of excellence for higher-agricultural education and research. Presently our academic programs (undergraduate) are running under 5 faculties comprising 43 departments. The faculties are: 1) Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences; 2) Agriculture; 3) Fisheries and Ocean Sciences; 4) Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Studies; and 5) Agricultural Engineering and Technology. Another two faculties (Faculty of Food Sciences and Safety, and Faculty of Environment, Disaster Risk and Agroclimatic Studies) are in the process to be included. At KAU, first batch undergraduate students took admission in the 2018-2019 session. The university is going to offer Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in the near future.

We are committed to provide needs-based quality education and cutting-edge research in addition to co-curricular facilities for our students so that they become highly competent to face the challenges of the 21st century. I believe our graduates will be a valuable partner for the local community, industry and government as well as for the entire world.
